What is the Difference between Green Tea and Matcha?

Matcha really is a whole different category of green tea. Why? Because it is the whole tea leaf ground into a fine powder. When mixing matcha with water, the entire tea leaf is consumed with its high level of antioxidants and nutritive ingredients. Whereas, drinking brewed green tea leaves, only the steeped tea is consumed. Not all the benefits are received as when drinking the 100% ground powder. In Japan, tea leaves are quickly steamed to stop the oxidation process of the leaves after picking. The leaves are de-stemmed and called tencha. It is these tencha leaves that are ground into a very fine powder becoming matcha, meaning ‘stone-ground tea.’ The matcha powder such as Tea Lover’s from My Matcha Life is a beautiful bright green color, the tell-tale sign of a high quality matcha.
